Follow{(G5720)} after charity, and desire{(G5720)} spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy{(G5725)}.

For he that speaketh{(G5723)} in an unknown tongue speaketh{(G5719)} not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth{(G5719)} him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh{(G5719)} mysteries.

But he that prophesieth{(G5723)} speaketh{(G5719)} unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

He that speaketh{(G5723)} in an unknown tongue edifieth{(G5719)} himself; but he that prophesieth{(G5723)} edifieth{(G5719)} the church.

{G1161} I would{(G5719)} that ye all spake{(G5721)} with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied{(G5725)}: for greater is he that prophesieth{(G5723)} than he that speaketh{(G5723)} with tongues, except{G1508} he interpret{(G5725)}, that the church may receive{(G5632)} edifying.

{G1161} Now, brethren, if I come{(G5632)} unto you speaking{(G5723)} with tongues, what shall I profit{(G5692)} you, except I shall speak{(G5661)} to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

And even things without life giving{(G5723)} sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give{(G5632)} a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known{(G5701)} what is piped{(G5746)} or harped{(G5746)}?

For{G2532} if the trumpet give{(G5632)} an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself{(G5695)} to the battle?

So likewise ye, except ye utter{(G5632)} by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known{(G5701)} what is spoken{(G5746)}? for ye shall{(G5704)} speak{(G5723)} into the air.

{G1487} There are{(G5748)}, it may be{(G5630)}, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification{(G5625)}.

Therefore if I know{(G5762)} not the meaning of the voice, I shall be{(G5704)} unto him that speaketh{(G5723)} a barbarian, and he that speaketh{(G5723)} shall be a barbarian unto me.

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are{(G5748)} zealous of spiritual gifts, seek{(G5720)} that ye may excel{(G5725)} to the edifying of the church.

Wherefore let him that speaketh{(G5723)} in an unknown tongue pray{(G5737)} that he may interpret{(G5725)}.

For if I pray{(G5741)} in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth{(G5736)}, but my understanding is{(G5748)} unfruitful.

What is it{(G5748)} then? I will pray{(G5695)} with the spirit, and I will pray{(G5695)} with the understanding also: I will sing{(G5692)} with the spirit, and I will sing{(G5692)} with the understanding also.

Else when thou shalt bless{(G5661)} with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth{(G5723)} the room of the unlearned say{(G5692)} Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth{(G5758)} not what thou sayest{(G5719)}?

For thou verily givest thanks{(G5719)} well, but the other is not edified{(G5743)}.

I thank{(G5719)} my God, I speak{(G5723)} with tongues more than ye all:

Yet in the church I had rather{(G5719)} speak{(G5658)} five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach{(G5661)} others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Brethren, be{(G5737)} not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children{(G5720)}, but in understanding be{(G5737)} men.

In the law it is written{(G5769)}, With men of other tongues and other{G2087} lips will I speak{(G5692)} unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear{(G5695)} me, saith{(G5719)} the Lord.

Wherefore tongues are{(G5748)} for a sign, not to them that believe{(G5723)}, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe{(G5723)}.

If therefore the whole church be come together{(G5632)} into one place, and all speak{(G5725)} with tongues, and there come in{(G5632)} those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say{(G5692)} that ye are mad{(G5736)}?

But if all prophesy{(G5725)}, and there come in{(G5632)} one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced{(G5743)} of all, he is judged{(G5743)} of all:

And thus are the secrets of his heart made{(G5736)} manifest; and so falling down{(G5631)} on his face he will worship{(G5692)} God, and report{(G5723)} that God is{(G5748)} in you of a truth.

How is it{(G5748)} then, brethren? when ye come together{(G5741)}, every one of you hath{(G5719)} a psalm, hath{(G5719)} a doctrine, hath{(G5719)} a tongue, hath{(G5719)} a revelation, hath{(G5719)} an interpretation. Let all things be done{(G5634)} unto edifying.

If any man speak{(G5719)} in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret{(G5720)}.

But if there be{(G5753)} no interpreter, let him keep silence{(G5720)} in the church; and let him speak{(G5720)} to himself, and to God.

{G1161} Let the prophets speak{(G5720)} two or three, and let the other judge{(G5720)}.

If{G1437} any thing be revealed{(G5686)} to another that sitteth by{(G5740)}, let the first hold his peace{(G5720)}.

For ye may{(G5736)} all prophesy{(G5721)} one by one{G1520}, that all may learn{(G5725)}, and all may be comforted{(G5747)}.

And the spirits of the prophets are subject{(G5743)} to the prophets.

For God is{(G5748)} not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Let your women keep silence{(G5720)} in the churches: for it is not permitted{(G5769)} unto them to speak{(G5721)}; but they are commanded to be under obedience{(G5733)}, as also saith{(G5719)} the law.

And if they will{(G5719)} learn{(G5629)} any thing, let them ask{(G5720)} their husbands at home: for it is{(G5748)} a shame for women to speak{(G5721)} in the church.

What? came the word of God out{(G5627)} from you? or came it{(G5656)} unto you only?

If any man think himself{(G5719)} to be{(G5750)} a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge{(G5720)} that the things that I write{(G5719)} unto you are{(G5748)} the commandments of the Lord.

But if any man be ignorant{(G5719)}, let him be ignorant{(G5720)}.

Wherefore, brethren, covet{(G5720)} to prophesy{(G5721)}, and forbid{(G5720)} not to speak{(G5721)} with tongues.

Let all things be done{(G5737)} decently and in order.
