And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established{(H8687)} the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook{(H8804)} the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up{(H8804)} against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed{(H8804)} against the LORD,

With twelve hundred{H505} chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came{(H8804)} with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

And he took{(H8799)} the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came{(H8799)} to Jerusalem.

Then came{(H8804)} Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together{(H8738)} to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said{(H8799)} unto them, Thus saith{(H8804)} the LORD, Ye have forsaken{(H8804)} me, and therefore have I also left{(H8804)} you in the hand of Shishak.

Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled{(H8735)} themselves; and they said{(H8799)}, The LORD is righteous.

And when the LORD saw{(H8800)} that they humbled{(H8738)} themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying{(H8800)}, They have humbled{(H8738)} themselves; therefore I will not destroy{(H8686)} them, but I will grant{(H8804)} them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out{(H8799)} upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

Nevertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know{(H8799)} my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

So Shishak king of Egypt came up{(H8799)} against Jerusalem, and took away{(H8799)} the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king's house; he took{(H8804)} all: he carried away{(H8799)} also the shields of gold which Solomon had made{(H8804)}.

Instead of which king Rehoboam made{(H8799)} shields of brass, and committed{(H8689)} them to the hands of the chief of the guard{(H8801)}, that kept{(H8802)} the entrance of the king's house.

And when the king entered{(H8800)} into the house of the LORD, the guard{(H8801)} came{(H8804)} and fetched{(H8804)} them, and brought them again{(H8689)} into the guard{(H8801)} chamber.

And when he humbled{(H8736)} himself, the wrath of the LORD turned{(H8804)} from him, that he would not destroy{(H8687)} him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.

So king Rehoboam strengthened{(H8691)} himself in Jerusalem, and reigned{(H8799)}: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign{(H8800)}, and he reigned{(H8804)} seventeen{H6240} years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen{(H8804)} out of all the tribes of Israel, to put{(H8800)} his name there. And his mother's name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

And he did{(H8799)} evil, because he prepared{(H8689)} not his heart to seek{(H8800)} the LORD.

Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written{(H8803)} in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies{(H8692)}? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

And Rehoboam slept{(H8799)} with his fathers, and was buried{(H8735)} in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned{(H8799)} in his stead.
