Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign{(H8804)}, and he reigned{(H8804)} twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

And he did{(H8799)} that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established{(H8804)} to him, that he slew{(H8799)} his servants that had killed{(H8688)} the king his father.

But he slew{(H8689)} not their children, but did as it is written{(H8803)} in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded{(H8765)}, saying{(H8800)}, The fathers shall not die{(H8799)} for the children, neither shall the children die{(H8799)} for the fathers, but every man shall die{(H8799)} for his own sin.

Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together{(H8799)}, and made{(H8686)} them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered{(H8799)} them from twenty years old and above, and found{(H8799)} them three hundred thousand choice{(H8803)} men, able to go forth{(H8802)} to war, that could handle{(H8802)} spear and shield.

He hired{(H8799)} also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.

But there came{(H8804)} a man of God to him, saying{(H8800)}, O king, let not the army of Israel go{(H8799)} with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.

But if thou wilt go{(H8798)}, do{(H8798)} it, be strong{(H8798)} for the battle: God shall make thee fall{(H8686)} before the enemy{(H8802)}: for God hath power to help{(H8800)}, and to cast down{(H8687)}.

And Amaziah said{(H8799)} to the man of God, But what shall we do{(H8800)} for the hundred talents which I have given{(H8804)} to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered{(H8799)}, The LORD is able to give{(H8800)} thee much more{(H8687)} than this.

Then Amaziah separated{(H8686)} them, to wit, the army that was come{(H8804)} to him out of Ephraim, to go home again{(H8800)}: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled{(H8799)} against Judah, and they returned{(H8799)} home in great anger.

And Amaziah strengthened{(H8694)} himself, and led forth{(H8799)} his people, and went{(H8799)} to the valley of salt, and smote{(H8686)} of the children of Seir ten thousand.

And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive{(H8804)}, and brought{(H8686)} them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down{(H8686)} from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces{(H8738)}.

But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back{(H8689)}, that they should not go{(H8800)} with him to battle, fell{(H8799)} upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote{(H8686)} three thousand of them, and took{(H8799)} much spoil.

Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come{(H8800)} from the slaughter{(H8687)} of the Edomites, that he brought{(H8686)} the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up{(H8686)} to be his gods, and bowed down{(H8691)} himself before them, and burned incense{(H8762)} unto them.

Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled{(H8799)} against Amaziah, and he sent{(H8799)} unto him a prophet, which said{(H8799)} unto him, Why hast thou sought{(H8804)} after the gods of the people, which could not deliver{(H8689)} their own people out of thine hand?

And it came to pass, as he talked{(H8763)} with him, that the king said{(H8799)} unto him, Art thou made{(H8804)} of the king's counsel{(H8802)}? forbear{(H8798)}; why shouldest thou be smitten{(H8686)}? Then the prophet forbare{(H8799)}, and said{(H8799)}, I know{(H8804)} that God hath determined{(H8804)} to destroy{(H8687)} thee, because thou hast done{(H8804)} this, and hast not hearkened{(H8804)} unto my counsel.

Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice{(H8735)}, and sent{(H8799)} to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying{(H8800)}, Come{(H8798)}, let us see one another{(H8691)} in the face.

And Joash king of Israel sent{(H8799)} to Amaziah king of Judah, saying{(H8800)}, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent{(H8804)} to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying{(H8800)}, Give{(H8798)} thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by{(H8799)} a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down{(H8799)} the thistle.

Thou sayest{(H8804)}, Lo, thou hast smitten{(H8689)} the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up{(H8804)} to boast{(H8687)}: abide{(H8798)} now at home; why shouldest thou meddle{(H8691)} to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall{(H8804)}, even thou, and Judah with thee?

But Amaziah would not hear{(H8804)}; for it came of God, that he might deliver{(H8800)} them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought{(H8804)} after the gods of Edom.

So Joash the king of Israel went up{(H8799)}; and they saw one another{(H8691)} in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

And Judah was put to the worse{(H8735)} before Israel, and they fled{(H8799)} every man to his tent.

And Joash the king of Israel took{(H8804)} Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought{(H8686)} him to Jerusalem, and brake down{(H8799)} the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner{(H8802)} gate, four hundred cubits.

And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found{(H8737)} in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages{H8594} also, and returned{(H8799)} to Samaria.

And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived{(H8799)} after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen{H6240} years.

Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written{(H8803)} in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?

Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away{(H8804)} from following the LORD they made{(H8799)} a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled{(H8799)} to Lachish: but they sent{(H8799)} to Lachish after him, and slew{(H8686)} him there.

And they brought{(H8799)} him upon horses, and buried{(H8799)} him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
