In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came{(H8804)} Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged{(H8799)} it.

And the Lord gave{(H8799)} Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried{(H8686)} into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought{(H8689)} the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

And the king spake{(H8799)} unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring{(H8687)} certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

Children in whom was no blemish{(H8675)}, but well favoured, and skilful{(H8688)} in all wisdom, and cunning{(H8802)} in knowledge, and understanding{(H8688)} science, and such as had ability in them to stand{(H8800)} in the king's palace, and whom they might teach{(H8763)} the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

And the king appointed{(H8762)} them a daily{H3117} provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing{(H8763)} them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand{(H8799)} before the king.

Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave{(H8799)} names: for he gave{(H8799)} unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

But Daniel purposed{(H8799)} in his heart that he would not defile{(H8691)} himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested{(H8762)} of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile{(H8691)} himself.

Now God had brought{(H8799)} Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

And the prince of the eunuchs said{(H8799)} unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed{(H8765)} your meat and your drink: for why should he see{(H8799)} your faces worse liking{(H8802)} than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger{(H8765)} my head to the king.

Then said{(H8799)} Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set{(H8765)} over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

Prove{(H8761)} thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give{(H8799)} us pulse to eat{(H8799)}, and water to drink{(H8799)}.

Then let our countenances be looked upon{(H8735)} before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat{(H8802)} of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest{(H8799)}, deal{(H8798)} with thy servants.

So he consented{(H8799)} to them in this matter, and proved{(H8762)} them ten days.

And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared{(H8738)} fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat{(H8802)} the portion of the king's meat.

Thus Melzar took away{(H8802)} the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave{(H8802)} them pulse.

As for these four children, God gave{(H8804)} them knowledge and skill{(H8687)} in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding{(H8689)} in all visions and dreams.

Now at the end of the days that the king had said{(H8804)} he should bring{(H8687)} them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought{(H8686)} them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

And the king communed{(H8762)} with them; and among them all was found{(H8738)} none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood{(H8799)} they before the king.

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired{(H8765)} of them, he found{(H8799)} them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
