Belshazzar the king made{(H8754)} a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank{(H8750)} wine before the thousand.

Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded{(H8754)} to bring{(H8682)} the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken{(H8684)} out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink{(H8748)} therein.

Then they brought{(H8684)} the golden vessels that were taken{(H8684)} out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank{(H8754)} in them.

They drank{(H8754)} wine, and praised{(H8745)} the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

In the same hour came forth{(H8754)} fingers of a man's hand, and wrote{(H8751)} over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw{(H8751)} the part of the hand that wrote{(H8751)}.

Then the king's countenance was changed{(H8754)}, and his thoughts troubled{(H8792)} him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed{(H8723)}, and his knees smote{(H8750)} one against another.

The king cried{(H8748)} aloud to bring{(H8682)} in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers{(H8750)}. And the king spake{(H8750)}, and said{(H8750)} to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever{H3606} shall read{(H8751)} this writing, and shew{(H8741)} me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed{(H8748)} with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler{(H8748)} in the kingdom.

Then came{(H8750)} in all the king's wise men: but they could{(H8751)} not read{(H8749)} the writing, nor make known{(H8682)} to the king the interpretation thereof.

Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled{(H8727)}, and his countenance was changed{(H8750)} in him, and his lords were astonied{(H8723)}.

Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came{(H8754)} into the banquet house: and the queen spake{(H8754)} and said{(H8754)}, O king, live{(H8747)} for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble{(H8792)} thee, nor let thy countenance be changed{(H8721)}:

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found{(H8728)} in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made{(H8684)} master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers{(H8750)};

Forasmuch as{H3606} an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting{(H8743)} of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving{(H8743)} of doubts, were found{(H8728)} in the same Daniel, whom the king named{(H8754)} Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called{(H8729)}, and he will shew{(H8681)} the interpretation.

Then was Daniel brought in{(H8717)} before the king. And the king spake{(H8750)} and said{(H8750)} unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought{(H8684)} out of Jewry?

I have even heard{(H8754)} of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found{(H8728)} in thee.

And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought{(H8717)} in before me, that they should read{(H8748)} this writing, and make known{(H8682)} unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could{(H8751)} not shew{(H8682)} the interpretation of the thing:

And I have heard{(H8754)} of thee, that thou canst{(H8748)} make{(H8749)} interpretations, and dissolve{(H8749)} doubts: now if thou canst{(H8748)} read{(H8749)} the writing, and make known{(H8682)} to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed{(H8748)} with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler{(H8748)} in the kingdom.

Then Daniel answered{(H8750)} and said{(H8750)} before the king, Let thy gifts be{(H8748)} to thyself, and give{(H8747)} thy rewards to another; yet I will read{(H8748)} the writing unto the king, and make known{(H8681)} to him the interpretation.

O thou king, the most high God gave{(H8754)} Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:

And for the majesty that he gave{(H8754)} him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled{(H8754)} and feared{(H8751)} before him: whom he would{(H8754)}{(H8750)} he slew{(H8754)}{(H8751)}; and whom he would{(H8754)}{(H8750)} he kept alive{(H8754)}{(H8683)}; and whom he would{(H8754)}{(H8750)} he set up{(H8754)}{(H8683)}; and whom he would{(H8754)}{(H8750)} he put down{(H8754)}{(H8683)}.

But when his heart was lifted up{(H8752)}, and his mind hardened{(H8748)} in pride{(H8682)}, he was deposed{(H8717)} from his kingly throne, and they took{(H8684)} his glory from him:

And he was driven{(H8752)} from the sons of men; and his heart was made{(H8745)} like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed{(H8748)} him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet{(H8721)} with the dew of heaven; till he knew{(H8754)} that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth{(H8681)} over it whomsoever he will{(H8748)}.

And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled{(H8684)} thine heart, though thou knewest{(H8754)} all this;

But hast lifted up{(H8712)} thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought{(H8684)} the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk{(H8750)} wine in them; and thou hast praised{(H8745)} the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see{(H8751)} not, nor hear{(H8750)}, nor know{(H8751)}: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified{(H8745)}:

Then was the part of the hand sent{(H8750)} from him; and this writing was written{(H8752)}.

And this is the writing that was written{(H8752)}, MENE{(H8752)}, MENE{(H8752)}, TEKEL{(H8752)}, UPHARSIN{(H8751)}.

This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE{(H8752)}; God hath numbered{(H8754)} thy kingdom, and finished{(H8684)} it.

TEKEL{(H8752)}; Thou art weighed{(H8760)} in the balances, and art found{(H8728)} wanting.

PERES{(H8752)}; Thy kingdom is divided{(H8752)}, and given{(H8753)} to the Medes and Persians.

Then commanded{(H8754)} Belshazzar, and they clothed{(H8684)} Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation{(H8684)} concerning him, that he should be{(H8748)} the third ruler in the kingdom.

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain{(H8752)}.

And Darius the Median took{(H8745)} the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
