✦Strong's Interlinear
1
And the children of Israel set forward{(H8799)}, and pitched{(H8799)} in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
2
And Balak the son of Zippor saw{(H8799)} all that Israel had done{(H8804)} to the Amorites.
3
And Moab was sore afraid{(H8799)} of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed{(H8799)} because of the children of Israel.
4
And Moab said{(H8799)} unto the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up{(H8762)} all that are round about us, as the ox licketh up{(H8800)} the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time.
5
He sent{(H8799)} messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call{(H8800)} him, saying{(H8800)}, Behold, there is a people come out{(H8804)} from Egypt: behold, they cover{(H8765)} the face of the earth, and they abide{(H8802)} over against me:
6
Come{(H8798)} now therefore, I pray thee, curse{(H8798)} me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail{(H8799)}, that we may smite{(H8686)} them, and that I may drive them out{(H8762)} of the land: for I wot{(H8804)} that he whom thou blessest{(H8762)} is blessed{(H8794)}, and he whom thou cursest{(H8799)} is cursed{(H8714)}.
7
And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed{(H8799)} with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came{(H8799)} unto Balaam, and spake{(H8762)} unto him the words of Balak.
8
And he said{(H8799)} unto them, Lodge{(H8798)} here this night, and I will bring you word again{(H8689)}, as the LORD shall speak{(H8762)} unto me: and the princes of Moab abode{(H8799)} with Balaam.
9
And God came{(H8799)} unto Balaam, and said{(H8799)}, What men are these with thee?
10
And Balaam said{(H8799)} unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent{(H8804)} unto me, saying,
11
Behold, there is a people come out{(H8802)} of Egypt, which covereth{(H8762)} the face of the earth: come{(H8798)} now, curse{(H8798)} me them; peradventure I shall be able{(H8799)} to overcome{(H8736)} them, and drive them out{(H8765)}.
12
And God said{(H8799)} unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go{(H8799)} with them; thou shalt not curse{(H8799)} the people: for they are blessed{(H8803)}.
13
And Balaam rose up{(H8799)} in the morning, and said{(H8799)} unto the princes of Balak, Get{(H8798)} you into your land: for the LORD refuseth{(H8765)} to give me leave{(H8800)} to go{(H8800)} with you.
14
And the princes of Moab rose up{(H8799)}, and they went{(H8799)} unto Balak, and said{(H8799)}, Balaam refuseth{(H8765)} to come{(H8800)} with us.
15
And Balak sent{(H8800)} yet again{(H8686)} princes, more, and more honourable{(H8737)} than they.
16
And they came{(H8799)} to Balaam, and said{(H8799)} to him, Thus saith{(H8804)} Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder{(H8735)} thee from coming{(H8800)} unto me:
17
For I will promote thee unto very great{(H8763)} honour{(H8762)}, and I will do{(H8799)} whatsoever thou sayest{(H8799)} unto me: come{(H8798)} therefore, I pray thee, curse{(H8798)} me this people.
18
And Balaam answered{(H8799)} and said{(H8799)} unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give{(H8799)} me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot{(H8799)} go beyond{(H8800)} the word of the LORD my God, to do{(H8800)} less or more.
19
Now therefore, I pray you, tarry{(H8798)} ye also here this night, that I may know{(H8799)} what the LORD will say{(H8763)} unto me more{(H8686)}.
20
And God came{(H8799)} unto Balaam at night, and said{(H8799)} unto him, If the men come{(H8804)} to call{(H8800)} thee, rise up{(H8798)}, and go{(H8798)} with them; but yet the word which I shall say{(H8762)} unto thee, that shalt thou do{(H8799)}.
21
And Balaam rose up{(H8799)} in the morning, and saddled{(H8799)} his ass, and went{(H8799)} with the princes of Moab.
22
And God's anger was kindled{(H8799)} because he went{(H8802)}: and the angel of the LORD stood{(H8691)} in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding{(H8802)} upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23
And the ass saw{(H8799)} the angel of the LORD standing{(H8737)} in the way, and his sword drawn{(H8803)} in his hand: and the ass turned aside{(H8799)} out of the way, and went{(H8799)} into the field: and Balaam smote{(H8686)} the ass, to turn{(H8687)} her into the way.
24
But the angel of the LORD stood{(H8799)} in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
25
And when the ass saw{(H8799)} the angel of the LORD, she thrust{(H8735)} herself unto the wall, and crushed{(H8799)} Balaam's foot against the wall: and he smote{(H8687)} her again{(H8686)}.
26
And the angel of the LORD went{(H8800)} further{(H8686)}, and stood{(H8799)} in a narrow place, where was no way to turn{(H8800)} either to the right hand or to the left.
27
And when the ass saw{(H8799)} the angel of the LORD, she fell down{(H8799)} under Balaam: and Balaam's anger was kindled{(H8799)}, and he smote{(H8686)} the ass with a staff.
28
And the LORD opened{(H8799)} the mouth of the ass, and she said{(H8799)} unto Balaam, What have I done{(H8804)} unto thee, that thou hast smitten{(H8689)} me these three times?
29
And Balaam said{(H8799)} unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked{(H8694)} me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill{(H8804)} thee.
30
And the ass said{(H8799)} unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden{(H8804)} ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever{(H8687)} wont{(H8689)} to do so{(H8800)} unto thee? And he said{(H8799)}, Nay.
31
Then the LORD opened{(H8762)} the eyes of Balaam, and he saw{(H8799)} the angel of the LORD standing{(H8737)} in the way, and his sword drawn{(H8803)} in his hand: and he bowed down{(H8799)} his head, and fell flat{(H8691)} on his face.
32
And the angel of the LORD said{(H8799)} unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten{(H8689)} thine ass these three times? behold, I went out{(H8804)} to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse{(H8804)} before me:
33
And the ass saw{(H8799)} me, and turned{(H8799)} from me these three times: unless she had turned{(H8804)} from me, surely now also I had slain{(H8804)} thee, and saved her alive{(H8689)}.
34
And Balaam said{(H8799)} unto the angel of the LORD, I have sinned{(H8804)}; for I knew{(H8804)} not that thou stoodest{(H8737)} in the way against{(H8800)} me: now therefore, if it displease thee{(H8804)}, I will get me back again{(H8799)}.
35
And the angel of the LORD said{(H8799)} unto Balaam, Go{(H8798)} with the men: but only the word that I shall speak{(H8762)} unto thee, that thou shalt speak{(H8762)}. So Balaam went{(H8799)} with the princes of Balak.
36
And when Balak heard{(H8799)} that Balaam was come{(H8802)}, he went out{(H8799)} to meet{(H8800)} him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
37
And Balak said{(H8799)} unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly{(H8800)} send{(H8804)} unto thee to call{(H8800)} thee? wherefore camest{(H8804)} thou not unto me? am I not able{(H8799)} indeed to promote thee to honour{(H8763)}?
38
And Balaam said{(H8799)} unto Balak, Lo, I am come{(H8804)} unto thee: have I now any power{(H8799)} at all{(H8800)} to say{(H8763)} any thing? the word that God putteth{(H8799)} in my mouth, that shall I speak{(H8762)}.
39
And Balaam went{(H8799)} with Balak, and they came{(H8799)} unto Kirjathhuzoth{H7155}.
40
And Balak offered{(H8799)} oxen and sheep, and sent{(H8762)} to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
41
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took{(H8799)} Balaam, and brought him up{(H8686)} into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see{(H8799)} the utmost part of the people.
