And Israel abode{(H8799)} in Shittim, and the people began{(H8686)} to commit whoredom{(H8800)} with the daughters of Moab.

And they called{(H8799)} the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat{(H8799)}, and bowed down{(H8691)} to their gods.

And Israel joined{(H8735)} himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled{(H8799)} against Israel.

And the LORD said{(H8799)} unto Moses, Take{(H8798)} all the heads of the people, and hang them up{(H8685)} before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away{(H8799)} from Israel.

And Moses said{(H8799)} unto the judges{(H8802)} of Israel, Slay{(H8798)} ye every one his men that were joined{(H8737)} unto Baalpeor.

And, behold, one of the children of Israel came{(H8802)} and brought{(H8686)} unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping{(H8802)} before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw{(H8799)} it, he rose up{(H8799)} from among the congregation, and took{(H8799)} a javelin in his hand;

And he went{(H8799)} after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust{(H8799)} both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed{(H8735)} from the children of Israel.

And those that died{(H8801)} in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

And the LORD spake{(H8762)} unto Moses, saying{(H8800)},

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away{(H8689)} from the children of Israel, while he was zealous{(H8763)} for my sake among them, that I consumed{(H8765)} not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

Wherefore say{(H8798)}, Behold, I give{(H8802)} unto him my covenant of peace:

And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous{(H8765)} for his God, and made an atonement{(H8762)} for the children of Israel.

Now the name of the Israelite that was slain{(H8716)}, even that was slain{(H8717)} with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain{(H8716)} was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

And the LORD spake{(H8762)} unto Moses, saying{(H8800)},

Vex{(H8800)} the Midianites, and smite{(H8689)} them:
18
For they vex{(H8802)} you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled{(H8765)} you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain{(H8716)} in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
